Messina's 3,000-year history is full of
disasters; a terrible earthquake wrecked the city in 1908 and killed some
60,000 people out of a population of 120,000. When the city was
rebuilt, focus was put on exceptionally broad streets with low buildings.
Try not to miss the Duomo, a Norman-Romanesque cathedral originally
constructed in 1197, with its adjoining bell tower that features a clock
that springs into action every day at noon.
From Messina, you can go to charming Taormina.
