Second largest
island of the Grenadines, Bequia is together with St. Vincent an independent
member of the British Commonwealth. Between the two islands stretches a
string of 100 tiny islets and cays, which are popular with yachtsmen and the
‘international set’. Although still very much off the beaten track, the
Grenadines are sought after for their fine diving and snorkeling
opportunities, good beaches, privacy and informal socializing.
Bequia’s chief village is Port Elizabeth in Admiralty Bay, which offers save
anchorage to luxury yachts from all over. The main industries are boat
building and repair work. At Paget Farm, whale harpooning is still practiced
from Fevrier to Mai by a few elderly fishermen. The island is quite hilledand well-forested, with a great variety of fruit and nut trees. On the south
coast, Moon Hole features a resort complex built into the cliffs, which is a
fine example of contemporary architecture. At the southern end is a small
headland, from where one can snorkel to Lower Bay, which has one of the best
beaches in Bequia; the nearest to Port Elizabeth is the pleasant Princess
Margaret beach. The island offers a rich and varied flora and fauna, and the
waters around Bequia are a great magnet for divers and snorkelers. Along
with fine restaurants and good craft-type shops this small idyllic island is
a true find for the discerning traveler.
